Citadel of Qaitbay
A 15th-century sea fort built from the rubble of the Pharos lighthouse.
About
The Citadel occupies the exact spot where the Pharos lighthouse stood — one of the Seven Wonders, roughly 120 metres high and functioning for seventeen centuries before earthquakes brought it down. Blocks from it are visible in the fort's lower courses, and archaeologists have mapped hundreds more on the seabed just offshore.
The fort itself is well preserved, and the walk out along the eastern harbour breakwater to reach it is the best twenty minutes in Alexandria.
History
Built in 1477 by Sultan Qaitbay to defend the harbour against the Ottomans. Bombarded by the British in 1882 and restored in the 1980s.
