Egypt's first national park, at the point where two gulfs meet.
About
Ras Mohamed sits at the southern tip of Sinai where the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba converge, and the nutrient flow through that junction supports extraordinary reef density. Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef drop from the surface to over 700 metres within a few metres of the wall.
Yolanda also holds the scattered cargo of a freighter that sank in 1980 — bathroom fittings, toilets and a BMW — spread across the coral at 20 metres and now one of the most photographed dive sites on earth.
History
Declared a national park in 1983 and extended in 1989 to cover 480 square kilometres. The mangrove channel and the hypersaline lake are also protected.
