Saqqara Necropolis

About
Saqqara was the necropolis of Memphis for over 3,000 years, and every period of Egyptian history is represented in its seven kilometres of desert. The Step Pyramid dominates it: six mastabas of decreasing size stacked to 62 metres by the architect Imhotep, the first time anyone anywhere built monumentally in stone.
Around it lie the Heb-Sed court, the Serapeum with its granite Apis bull sarcophagi, the Pyramid of Unas with the earliest Pyramid Texts, and a series of nobles' mastabas whose painted reliefs of farming, fishing and butchery are the best record of Old Kingdom daily life.
History
The Step Pyramid was built around 2670 BC for Djoser of the Third Dynasty. Imhotep, its architect, was later deified — one of only a handful of non-royal Egyptians ever to be worshipped as a god.
