Dahab never became a resort, and that is the appeal. You walk into the dive sites from the shore — the Blue Hole, the Canyon, the Islands — which makes serious diving cheaper here than anywhere else on the Red Sea, and has made the town the world's centre for learning to freedive. Evenings are Bedouin tea on floor cushions at the Lighthouse. Mount Sinai, Saint Catherine's and the Coloured Canyon are all a short drive inland.
