About
Djeser-Djeseru, 'the holy of holies', rises in three colonnaded terraces linked by long ramps against the cliff wall behind it. It looks startlingly modern and it is one of the great pieces of architecture of any period.
The Punt colonnade records Hatshepsut's trading expedition to the land of Punt in painted relief, including the fish of the Red Sea and the notably large queen of Punt. The Birth colonnade asserts her divine parentage — a necessary argument for a woman ruling as pharaoh.
History
Built around 1470 BC by the architect Senenmut for Hatshepsut, the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty and one of the most successful rulers Egypt had. After her death her successor Thutmose III had her images systematically erased.
