About
Karnak is not one temple but a city of them, covering 100 hectares. The Precinct of Amun-Re alone would hold ten European cathedrals. Its Great Hypostyle Hall contains 134 sandstone columns in sixteen rows, the twelve central ones 21 metres high with capitals wide enough for fifty people to stand on.
Beyond it lie Hatshepsut's obelisk, the sacred lake, the Botanical Garden reliefs of Thutmose III, and a series of pylons each built by a different pharaoh wanting to be the last thing you passed through.
History
Construction ran from roughly 2000 BC to 100 AD — around thirty pharaohs contributed. Napoleon's savants surveyed it in 1798 and Champollion used its inscriptions in the decipherment of hieroglyphs.
