Overview
Around thirty pharaohs built and rebuilt Karnak over 1,500 years, and the site is big enough to hold ten cathedrals. The Great Hypostyle Hall on its own has 134 sandstone columns — the tallest 21 metres high — with painted decoration still visible near the top.
Three kilometres to the south, Luxor Temple is smaller and far more unified: one processional line running from the pylon of Ramses II to the sanctuary. The Avenue of Sphinxes, reopened recently, joins the two temples again for the first time in 3,000 years. Stay until dark to see Luxor Temple lit up — it is at its most beautiful then.
