About
Khan El Khalili began as a caravanserai and has been continuously trading for over six centuries. The tourist frontage on Al-Muski is loud and expensive; two streets back, the coppersmiths, the spice merchants, the lantern makers and the gold souk are where Cairenes actually shop.
El Fishawy, in an alley off the main square, has not closed since 1773 and serves mint tea to a constant flow of locals, tourists, cats and vendors.
History
Built in 1382 by Emir Djaharks el-Khalili on the site of the Fatimid caliphs' burial ground. The Fatimid tombs were dug up and dumped, which was controversial at the time and has been remembered ever since.
