Overview

Egyptian food is a street cuisine and most visitors never get near it. This evening walk covers seven stops across downtown Cairo and Sayeda Zeinab, all places that locals queue at: a koshary house that has been serving one dish since 1950, a ful medames cart working out of a copper pot, a taameya griddle turning out green falafel from fava beans, hawawshi from a baker's oven, fresh sugarcane juice, konafa and finally Umm Ali.

You walk about three kilometres over four hours, and it doubles as a tour of ordinary Cairo — the streets between the tastings are the point as much as the food.

  • Koshary, ful, taameya, hawawshi, sugarcane juice, konafa, Umm Ali
