Overview

Start high. The Cairo Tower's observation deck is 187 metres up on Gezira island, and going at dusk means you see the city in daylight, in the ten minutes of orange, and then lit — three different cities in half an hour. Entry is included with priority access, which matters because the sunset lift queue is the longest of the day.

Then down and east into the old quarter. Khan El Khalili has been a market since 1382 and is still a working one behind the tourist frontage; the guide takes you through the copper and spice lanes rather than the postcard aisle. From there onto Al-Muizz, the Fatimid street that runs north through the finest concentration of Mamluk architecture anywhere, floodlit and closed to cars.

Ends with tea at El Fishawy, which has been open more or less continuously since 1797.
