Overview
Kom Ombo is unique in Egypt: a temple built twice over, perfectly symmetrical, with one half dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god and the other to Haroeris the falcon. Alongside it, a small museum holds around three hundred mummified crocodiles recovered from the surrounding sands, plus a wall relief showing what looks unnervingly like a set of surgical instruments.
Edfu, an hour further north, is the best-preserved temple anywhere in Egypt — buried in silt until the 1860s, which is why the roof is still on and the reliefs are crisp. The pylon stands 36 metres and the black granite falcons in the courtyard are among the most photographed statues in the country. Both sites can be combined with a one-way drop in Luxor.
